A good reason to upgrade

For the life of me, I can't seem to find my camera's battery charger. I literally turned my room upside down (as well as threw away a few things I didn't use) trying to look for it. Oh well. A good excuse to upgrade :D

I'll probably get a SLR-like camera this time, since I squeeze out all of the uses from my Canon SD600 camera. And since I learn by doing, I'm hoping I can just get a camera and grow into it, yet I want one that is simple to use and is upgradable in the future (if I don't lose anything first). Ooh, and I gotta look out for deals on 8gb+ SDHD cards.

A customer came in with a laptop, wanting me to try and repair it and do an insurance write up because his toddler spilt a liquid on the computer, then dropped the laptop (a Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop to be precise). Now, I've worked on a lot of Toshibas, and maybe 75% of them that come in are DOA and I just have to check it and do an insurance write up for an insurance claim. I do a pre-check and find that it won't boot - I tried with battery, AC adaptor only, a combo of both, removed RAM - no beeps. Then for the next 20 minutes, I disassembled the laptop, wiping liquid from the inside as I go; reseated the CPU, chipset heatsink, and blew dust out from the motherboard and heatsink. I put it back together, and IT LIVES! I get a post, then the XP loading screen. A few seconds later, I hear the XP bootup sound, and everything seems to work... but the keyboard. No worries, I just remove the keyboard again, take down the model number, and write up the paperwork with the price for the keyboard replacement.

I'm thinking that his kid recently spilled the liquid and dropped it, because if he waited a week or more (like what other people do) then it would have been a goner.

I'm addicted to ubuntu!

I installed ubuntu a while ago to try and triboot Vista/XP/Ubuntu together (I ran out of SATA data cables and I got lazy to buy more so I can add my XP HDD) and I'm finding myself booting into Ubuntu more than Vista for my basic computer needs.

So far, I've applied a Mac theme using this guide and customized small parts of ubuntu with a weather dock, multiple desktops, and various software I'm discovering throughout the internet.

Sure, I have to spend a lot of time customizing it, but so far there's a lot of guides and tons of support I can read up on to get things going when I'm in a jam.

My next step is probably get a laptop (any age), install ubuntu, and bring it with me on the go. Heck, I may setup a box at work and show people what it can do.

Where are they coming from???

This week alone, we've taken in about 44 computers - luckily mostly laptops - because we're seriously running out of room to put them. To make it worse, I only fixed 6 of them within the past 3 days. The bad news is... they're going to Iraq. We'll probably see most of them back here in about 15-24 months filled with dust and grime and other wonderful stuff our vacuum loves.
