RIP Mary, my pet cat

Sadly, my pet cat Mary passed away yesterday. Apparently, 'she came through the front door of our house (she was an in/out house cat) walked around one of our chairs, laid down and made a couple of 'coughing' noises then closed her eyes' as recited by my Mom last night. Unfortunately, she suffered through this as she wasn't acting like herself a week before.

We buried her at my Grandma's house, since she took care of her most of the time when she was living with us.

RIP Mary

Desktop is on life support

Okay, its not that serious, but my desktop's Hard drive needs to be replaced ASAP if I want to continue to use it on a daily basis. It froze when I was playing music this morning, and when I turned it on from a hard boot, it wouldn't boot to the Hard drive. I'm currently using it via a live Ubuntu CD (god bless it) to get my last remaining files I need onto my laptop. Looks like I'll need *counts* about four external enclosures to get the Hard drives alive if I don't somehow spend the money to install a new Hard drive into my desktop.

Today's lesson? Don't put your eggs in one basket.

avoid HPs... and possibly Nvidia chipsets

I went through two HP slimline s3000 series desktops today - one of them was overheating due to the small size (gotta love SFF PCs) and the other's motherboard decided to stop working after I finished installing Vista. I looked at its specs, and it has an Nvidia chipset.

Maybe I'll go with HP again... with an intel chipset and an ATI video card.

I need a vacation

I've had laptop problems tonight - it wouldn't boot up. I tried everything possible without taking it apart - with the last option being to let it sit (for 20 minutes) with no power (battery or AC adapter) and try again - which worked.

a bit uncertain

Yesterday, my manager told me and a coworker that our contract is now on a day to day basis, and that the mall we're working at (under the military's AAFES) can let us go anytime.

Well, I got more of the story, and it looks as though AAFES wants to put us into the PX's Powerzone - their electronics section of the mall. They had someone doing something similar to us (repair computers) but I guess they quit. It would be a good opportunity for us as the Powerzone has more customers, but we won't be able to sell products - only fix them.

However, if we do get kicked out (after a month's time to get everything together) my manager would bring us over to his new store at an undetermined places right now.

There's nothing wrong my laptop ATM, but it can hold up to 8gb of RAM and I currently have my old laptop's HDD in its 2nd drive bay but I need more storage. I just priced the RAM and a 320gb HDD on, and it'll be almost $500 with shipping!

Oh well. Like my desktop, I can probably upgrade it within time till it dies.

New hotness... meet old 'n busted

So, it took all day, but now my laptop is ready to face the world... okay, almost.

XP doesn't have all of its drivers installed, but Vista and 7 does! And like the fan I am, I installed GTA:IV and I was able to play it on medium at full resolution! Although I'll have to replay the game all over again.

Suddenly my desktop is feeling old.

2 hours... 2 freakin' hours!

That's how much time it took me to screw up my new laptop. It looks like my thumb drive caught a virus from a customer's computer when I was loading software onto their computer. All I was doing was installing antivirus and firewall software, then when I restarted - errors galore.

Its done

This morning, I just submitted my order for two laptops: a Gateway MD7818u for my Mom and an Asus G50Vt-X5 - both for under $1,600 - that's right: two laptops for a price of a Macbook - and I'll be able to play GTA:IV on medium to high settings.

waiting for a certain email sucks

I ordered something special for my Mom a few minutes ago, and now I'm waiting for an email to confirm its ready to pickup (a few hours before the store is open).

She better like it. ;)

No Mac, mac

I did a comparison shop after finding out that its possible to play GTA:IV on a Macbook, and it looks like I'll have to spend $1,700 at for a comparable Macbook with a 2x 2gb RAM upgrade - not to mention Vista if I want to install Windows via boot camp. And if I do play GTA:IV, the performance will be on par (or worse) than my 3 year old desktop (which will go into early retirement).

If I get it at, then it'll be a bit cheaper - but still, its going over my budget.

A macbook for me?

Since I'm getting frustrated with Windows, I'm actually thinking of switching to the dark side (aka getting a Mac). I've been fixing a couple of Macs (everything from reinstalling OS X to upgrading RAM and HDDs to replacing screens) so I might as well make it a permanent thing.

I just priced everything out for a 13.3" macbook with the 2ghz c2d processor, 2x 2gb DDR2-1066 RAM and 250gb SATA HDD for a hair over $1,500.

The only bad side about this, is if I configured a similarly priced laptop (say, a Dell XPS m1330) I can have Office 2007, Vista Ultimate, and a memory card reader. With the Mac, I'll have to install Windows and Office for me to use any word processing editor on it (since I do use .docx).

*the Dell laptop was configured in March 2009 with an instant savings of $400 - bringing the total down to about$1,600 from about $2,100*
