I survived the February 27, 2010 Tsunami Warning

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile last night Hawaii time, which generated a tsunami wave that headed to the islands of Hawaii (and other pacific rim nations). At 6am, the civil defense sirens awoken me - first I thought I was dreaming, but when I saw it was still night, I turned on my radio to 92.3 KSSK, and heard Perry and Price announce there was a tsunami threat to us. Eventually, the tsunami would hit the islands an hour before noon, with the wave hitting Oahu at about 11:40am, but it didn't come.

As soon as the family were ready, we loaded my car and headed to my cousin's house. Since people might need evacuating, I drove our wheelchair transport van to be prepared to be dispatched to locations to help with evacuation efforts (but the city's Handi-van took care of that).

It was a good drill and it was better to be prepared than to have unforeseen damage.

I'm going to let the Apple rot

The only thing holding me back from using my Zune HD full time is my car: I installed an iPod adapter to play through my car's stereo, and I can't find a similar solution for my Zune HD. I can play it in my work van through the auxiliary jack, but then to change a song, I need to reach for the Zune HD and flick the screen up, then change the song. Oh, and its my 'bathroom companion' (I hate reading magazines when I have down time).

Other than that, I'm Apple-less.

Zune: needs work

Okay, there's a few things that the Zune HD Personal Media Player does well: it plays videos with its very crisp OLED screen, and it does have radio for your traffic/weather updates.

However, like (or unlike) Apple's iPod, the main thorn is the software. With iTunes, you can just make a new playlist, and drag music into that playlist. With Zune's software, apparently they expect you to deal with the playlists through the library. I tried to remedy it by making a new playlist in Windows Media Player and adding that playlist to the Zune software, but it won't work because the music can't be found via the Zune software.

EDIT: I just created a new playlist for another group of songs, it works.

Hello, Zune.

Yes, you read right: Zune, as in Microsoft Zune. I got the 16gb version for about $200 from Best Buy, and the hardest thing about it was the wait for the 2nd confirmation email. I didn't receive it, so after about 50 minutes after I got the first email, I drove to the store and picked it up. :D

Its charging via my computer's USB port, but man, what looks to be the screen saver or something, it's fricken beautiful! Its not a MP3 player, its a PMP. Sadly, you'll have to pay extra for the HD dock (which I'll get) and if I want to play it in my car, I'll have to get another cable from gromaudio.

I'll give an initial review after I installed the software on my computer either in a few mintues or tomorrow.
